Research finds splints work well for kids' broken wrists

Children who break a wrist can heal as well in a splint as a cast, a new study has discovered. The advantage of a splint is that it can be removed occasionally to wash the arm or let it breathe or scratch itchy skin, according to co-author Dr. Kathy Boutis, an emergency room pediatrician at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

One slight drawback: kids can't brandish their plaster of Paris cast-encased arm for the time-honoured tradition of having it signed by friends. The study, published Tuesday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, looked at 92 children aged five to 12 who arrived in the hospital's emergency room between April 2007 and September 2009 with broken wrists.

Sound sleep very early in life is the best insurance against obesity, a research has found. Babies, toddlers and pre-school children sleeping less than 10 hours a night are more likely to be overweight as they age. Experts believe that lack of sleep causes one to feel hunger and crave calorie-rich snacks during the day, reports Daily Mail.

Previous research has linked sleep deprivation with obesity in adults and teenagers, but this is one of the first to look at very small children, says the journal Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Researchers from the Universities of Washington and California examined sleeping habits of almost 1,000 children less than five years old.

Do Not Counter Your Parents

Do Not Counter Your Parents: People may believe that they have been sent on this earth by God Himself and we go back when He recalls us. But at the same time we shall have to accept that we have come here on this earth through our parents and up till now, we could not see a person who has come on this earth directly from God. Even the people who have got some place in mythologies and in history and who had been founding religions and had been telling us that they are God had come on this earth through their parents and none has come directly from the side of God. That is the reason in Hindu Shastras, it has been admitted that parents are above all and none on earth can have a place equal to parents.

Whooping cough worry health experts

Whopping cough, which has now taken the shape of a potential epidemic, is now worrying health experts. Six babies have already succumbed to pertussis. Experts also state that irregular vaccination practices may be contributing to dangerous cases of the preventable disease.

Dr. Saad B. Omer, an assistant professor with Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and an national expert on immunization practices, said, "I'm saddened, but I can't truly say I'm surprised. We know and we have known for a while that we have these gaps in protection at the local level."

Places like Michigan, Idaho, Texas, California and South Carolina, have reported several cases and the number reported is 1,500 children, which is the worst outbreak in 50 years.Reports also state that some people in California and Michigan have denied from getting vaccinated due to complications from the shots.

This has led to experts getting worried about herd immunity, the necessary level of protection that keeps disease from spreading. This has put those people in danger of getting exposed for whom vaccines do not work. Like babies are too young to be immunized.

A study of more than 500 infant deaths found babies born outside the hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, were more at risk - an extra one or two deaths per 10,000 live births.

The babies were significantly more likely to die from a lack of oxygen than those born during usual working hours, experts said. They believe one possible reason for the extra risk is a lack of immediate access to senior staff at weekends and during the evenings.

Researchers have discovered that too much weight gained during the gestation of a baby more than quadruples the risk of women being overweight decades later. That in turn could lead to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and other problems associated with being overweight. Now they say the advice given to expectant mothers should be radically altered so that their long term health is given as much priority as that of the baby.

“For the last 40 years the whole issue in weight gain in pregnancy has worried about what it would do to the children,” said Professor Philip James, chairman of the International Obesity TaskForce (IOTF) who has developed guidelines for the World Health Organisation.
